George H. Amber Trust

George was a twin born to a carpenter, a member of the Workman’s Circle. He and his brother learned to speak English at Custer school when they were seven years old. Years later they expressed their gratitude by contributing funds for a school library. When he graduated high school, jobs were scarce so his father gave them tuition money to enroll in Lawrence Tech. His goal was to be an engineer. When World War II was declared, the government finished his education in lieu of his enlistment in the army.

After the war he and his brother built apartments that catered to young people. The Amber Apartments featured modern European style apartments, a new concept in a U.S. building. With his gift for writing catchy advertisements, the apartments drew attention and were quickly rented. After he died donations were made to many Jewish causes in the Detroit Metro area.
